"Friends of Waukee Public Schools, PART 2" UPDATED

PART 2: Who are they? What is their purpose?

Good evening friends. If you will recall, I previously wrote about a PAC that was being ran by current board candidate, Tami Rubino. This PAC was from two years ago, and she was trying to support four anti-CRT extremist candidates and get them on the board to pass their extreme agenda without hindrance.

Thankfully the Waukee voters could see straight through this ploy, and all four of those candidates lost. This time they only have two right-wing candidates. One of them, Tami, is the wife of the candidate Jeff Rubino who ran and lost last time. But some seem more desperate than ever to get them placed on the board. Since the anti-CRT flopped so badly for them last time, it seems like they are trying to move to the center in the days before the election just simply to get the votes they need. I have studied this movement for two years, and I don’t think their political beliefs have changed at all.

These letters span a period of years but up to and including this year. They give a good insight into the mind-frame of this board candidate. Instead of telling you my own thoughts, I suggest you read through some of the letters to form your own opinion about this person being a board leader for our children. Then come to your own conclusion about if these are the best candidates for our children. Anti-CRT, Anti-equity, and complaints about curriculum. The curriculum, they say, is too brutally honest for our delicate children.

The group holding this philosophy doesn’t want our children to know that our country had racism in its past. They don’t want our children to know that there were many who slaughtered native Americans. They don’t want our children to know that some organizations even today have structural racism built in. They don’t even want the truth to be told about Christopher Columbus? To deny all of these things just makes us weaker as a country.

They wish to perceptualize this myth of American exceptionalism. This myth is what is making us as weak as we are. And we are getting weaker every year. We can’t always assume we are the greatest on earth, when in fact we are falling behind in so many areas. This breeds the terrible complacency that we now find ourselves in. We want our children to know the truth. To learn what mistakes we have collectively made, to be competitive and offer the chance to improve our standing on earth.

Regardless, these are ALL scare tactics by the right-wing. You can ignore all of them, and just vote for the three candidates that came out and committed to strongly support public education! The difference between these two groups is not even close!

Next let’s get to the details of this shadowy PAC named Friends of Waukee. Please see the attached paperwork so we can get a better idea for who is helping the ultra-conservative campaign.

Above, you can see a payment made for services to a company owned by former State Senator Jake Chapman. It’s a small world indeed. What kind of service was offered? There were a few things printed and distributed, and also several picture SMS messages that people commented would normally be quite expensive.

I think sunlight is the best policy. It’s good to know what we truly are getting from the conservative candidates. Even better to understand who's paying for it. I think it's helpful to realize that “friends of” a public schools doesn’t mean that almost everyone around you agrees with these candidates. They have a mostly small core of supporters. This is what the Wolves and Warrior financial reports have shown.

Back to the present. When they newly receive money from their PAC donors. Perhaps it may be used on any of these items:

The flyer above was found in several places, but completely unattributed, meaning they were ashamed of what they were doing here.

Finally, several people complained of unsolicited text and photo messages sent to their phones. These seemed to be blanketed to almost everyone, and not micro-targeted. I was told this is a typical function of Jake Chapman’s company, but I don’t have any confirmation of this. It’s outrageous that they resort to asking voters to only vote for two of the three open positions. It certainly doesn’t seem like this is in the best interests of our children.

Well, here’s your chance with the ONLY conservatives on the ballot. If you can still even consider the new brand of Trumpism as anything like classic conservatism of the GOP from years gone by. I think it’s mostly just a cult of personality and nothing more. Most of the values being promoted now are far more authoritarian than conservative. They are completely selfish and unprincipled like that of their leader. The time to resist these changes is now. Every election counts. Please come out and vote on November 7th!!

More importantly to this topic, the flyer above was paid for by the same group, Friends of Waukee Public School. So those “friends” are just the people that you see on the donor list above. Certainly they're mostly voucher supporters, and thus no friends of public schools.

Jennifer Briggs: Polk County M4L Facebook member. You are correct that she has been active on Facebook with anti-LGBTQ and anti-equity comments. Dan Gehlbach: Former WCSD board member who did not support the Equity Standards. Now an Iowa House Representative who supported the voucher and anti-LGBTQ bills passed this last legislative session. He and his wife Staci are Polk County M4L Facebook members.

Ryan Glick: Treasurer of 2021 WWU PAC

Michael Hughes: Husband of Morgan Hughes 2021 candidate and Polk County M4L Facebook member

David Cunningham: Former WCSD board member who did not support the Equity Standards

There are many more, but not as many as you may think by the title “Friends of Waukee Schools” PAC. It’s just a relatively small group of extremists trying to get their national agenda before our board. Let’s not let them do this!

PLEASE VOTE FOR THE NON M4L CANDIDATES! They have committed to public dollars for public schools. Join me in voting for the following candidates. Every vote is important!
